About the Comprehensive Big Five Test (300 Items)

This is the most comprehensive personality test in our Big Five family. It measures the same five traits and 30 facets as the 120-item form - Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Emotional Stability, each broken into six facets - but estimates every facet from far more items. With 60 statements per trait, 10 per facet, it takes about an hour.

The reason to spend that hour is precision. A facet measured from four items gives you a directional read; the same facet measured from ten items gives you a score you can interpret with confidence at the facet level. This 300-item version follows the IPIP-NEO-300, the full public-domain successor to the facet structure of the commercial NEO inventories. It is built for people who want the fullest, most reliable picture and are willing to trade time for it - not for a quick read, which the shorter forms in the family do better.

This is the most comprehensive form in our Big Five family. The standard 50-item Big Five test is the canonical version and is far quicker; choose this 300-item form only when you want the fullest, highest-reliability facet profile and can spend about an hour. The 120-item form covers the same facets in less time at lower precision.

What it measures

Each of the five traits and each of the 30 facets is a continuous spectrum, and the report describes both poles of every dimension without treating either as better. What sets this form apart is depth of measurement rather than scope of content: it covers the same hierarchy as the 120-item version but resolves each facet with enough items that the facet scores stand on their own as dependable measurements rather than indicators. The five traits below are the headline dimensions; beneath each sit six facets, and at this length the facet profile is the main event.

The science and validity

The five-factor structure is among the most replicated findings in personality psychology, recovered across cultures, languages, ages, and instruments, and the hierarchical scheme of broad factors over narrow facets is well established. The practical case for a long form is straightforward: reliability rises with the number of items per scale, so a 10-item facet scale supports far more confident facet-level interpretation than a 4-item one. The full 30-facet structure used here originates with the NEO inventories and was placed in the public domain through the International Personality Item Pool.

Our scale uses the IPIP-NEO-300, the original 300-item public-domain inventory assembled by Lewis Goldberg, with item-level documentation later extended by John A. Johnson’s work on the shorter forms. With 60 items per domain and 10 per facet, both the trait and facet scales give the most consistent scores in our Big Five family. Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the standard 50-item Big Five test?

The 50-item form gives one reliable score per trait in about 15 minutes; this 300-item form measures the same five traits plus all 30 facets beneath them, with each facet estimated from 10 items so the facet scores are themselves dependable. It is the difference between a solid broad profile and the fullest, most precise picture we offer. The trade-off is time: this version takes about an hour. Most people should start with the 50-item form and choose this one only when they specifically want maximum depth.

Is a longer test actually more accurate?

For a given scale, yes, up to a point: reliability rises with the number of items, so a facet measured from 10 items is scored more precisely than the same facet from 4 items. That is the entire case for this form. It does not measure anything the shorter versions cannot name; it measures the same hierarchy more reliably, especially at the facet level. For broad trait scores alone, the gain over the 50-item form is modest, which is why the long form pays off mainly when you care about facets.

How long does the 300-item test really take?

About 60 minutes, and we would rather be honest than optimistic about that. There are 300 statements. You can take breaks and return, but the form is a genuine time commitment, so plan to do it when you can give it sustained, honest attention. Rushing a long form undermines exactly the precision that makes it worth taking.

The 120-item form measures each facet from 4 items in about 25 minutes - enough for directional facet reads. This 300-item form measures each facet from 10 items in about an hour, giving facet scores precise enough to interpret on their own. Choose by how much weight you want to put on individual facets versus how much time you have.

The instrument uses the public-domain IPIP-NEO-300 developed from Lewis Goldberg’s International Personality Item Pool, in the facet tradition extended by John A. Johnson. The scoring and report were built and reviewed by Dr. Milos Kankaras, PhD psychometrician, whose background includes large-scale assessment work for the OECD, the EU, and UNESCO.
