Fluid vs Crystallized Intelligence.

A single IQ number hides an important structure. Decades of research show that general intelligence has distinguishable parts, and the most influential split - introduced by Raymond Cattell and developed with John Horn - is between fluid and crystallized ability. The two feel different in everyday life: one is the spark of working out something brand new, the other is the depth of what you already know.

Fluid vs crystallized intelligence

Fluid intelligence (Gf) is the ability to reason and solve novel problems independent of prior knowledge - spotting the rule in an unfamiliar pattern or matrix. Crystallized intelligence (Gc) is the accumulated knowledge, vocabulary, and verbal skill you have built through experience and education. The distinction comes from the work of Raymond Cattell and John Horn. The two are correlated but separable, and they follow different lifespan curves: fluid abilities peak early and decline gradually, while crystallized abilities stay stable or rise into middle age.

Fluid intelligence (Gf): reasoning in the moment

Fluid intelligence is your capacity to reason, see relationships, and solve problems you have never encountered, with little help from stored knowledge. It is what a matrix-reasoning item is built to tap: you are shown an unfamiliar pattern and have to infer the rule and apply it. Working memory and processing speed are closely tied to it.

Because fluid reasoning leans on raw, in-the-moment processing rather than learned content, it is relatively independent of your education and background knowledge. That is also why it shows the clearest age-related change: fluid abilities tend to peak in the late teens to late twenties and then decline gradually across adulthood.

Crystallized intelligence (Gc): the knowledge you have built

Crystallized intelligence is the body of knowledge, vocabulary, and verbal and factual skill you have accumulated over a lifetime of learning and experience. It is what a vocabulary or general-knowledge item taps: the answer is not reasoned out from scratch but retrieved from what you have already learned.

Crystallized ability depends heavily on education, culture, and exposure, and it follows a far gentler age curve than fluid ability. It typically stays stable or keeps rising into middle age and is well preserved into later life. This is why an older adult can bring deep knowledge and verbal skill to a problem even as raw processing speed softens - the two abilities are doing different jobs.

How the two relate (and why one score still works)

Fluid and crystallized intelligence are correlated - people strong in one tend to be somewhat strong in the other - which is part of why a single general factor, often called g, captures a lot of the shared variance and why one overall IQ number is meaningful at all. But they are separable enough that a good assessment gains information by looking at both.

In the broader Cattell-Horn-Carroll framework that organizes modern ability research, Gf and Gc sit alongside other broad abilities such as memory and processing speed, all under a general factor. The practical upshot is that one number summarizes overall standing, while a domain breakdown shows the more reasoning-heavy and more knowledge-heavy sides of how you scored.

How our four domains map onto Gf and Gc

The verbal domain leans crystallized: it draws more on accumulated vocabulary and language knowledge. As always, treat an online result as a band rather than a precise point.
