How to Tell a Valid Free IQ Test from Entertainment.
Search for a free IQ test and you will find sites that hand out scores of 150 after eight questions, certificates for a fee, and averages that flatter everyone. The format is profitable because inflated scores get shared. This page gives you the checklist a psychometrician would use to judge any online IQ test - including ours.
The four marks of a real test
Apply these four checks before trusting any score:
- Classical item formats with research lineage: matrix reasoning, number and letter series, verbal analogies, mental rotation - not trivia or general knowledge
- Normed scoring: your score is computed against a documented reference population on the standard IQ metric (mean 100, SD 15), not invented
- An honest ceiling: unsupervised online tests cannot certify extreme scores; a test that reports 180 is entertainment by definition (ours caps at 160 and says why)
- Stated limits: a real test tells you what it cannot do - certify giftedness, diagnose anything, or replace supervised assessment
What an online score can tell you
A well-built online test with enough items can reliably place you within the broad population range - whether your reasoning performance sits near the middle, clearly above, or clearly below - and show your relative strengths across domains like verbal, abstract, and spatial reasoning. That is genuinely useful self-knowledge.
What it cannot do is what only individually administered, professionally supervised tests (WAIS, Stanford-Binet, official Mensa sessions) can: certify a precise score for high-stakes decisions, account for test conditions, or support clinical interpretation. Any honest online test, including ours, is serious self-assessment rather than certification.
Picking the right test for your question
Want the broadest estimate? Take a multi-domain battery - ours samples verbal, logical, abstract, and spatial reasoning across 50 items. Want a culture-reduced, language-free measurement? Take the Abstract Reasoning test, a matrices-only measure in the Raven tradition. Curious where you stand against the Mensa format? Take a Mensa-style practice test and read the score as practice, not admission.
Frequently asked questions
Are free online IQ tests accurate?
The honest ones are reliable enough to place you within the broad population range and profile your relative strengths; none can certify a precise score the way supervised testing can. The tell is whether a test admits this - tests that promise exact scores above 160 online are entertainment.
What is an average IQ score?
By construction, 100 - the metric is scaled so the population mean is 100 with a standard deviation of 15. About two thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and roughly 2 percent score above 130.
Does practicing IQ tests raise your IQ?
Practice produces modest, format-specific gains - familiarity with item types, better strategies, faster pacing - which is why retest scores creep upward. The underlying ability is far more stable. Take a test rested and focused, and read same-format retests within weeks skeptically.
