Work Design Questionnaire.
WDQ
- What it measures
- Work characteristics across 21 dimensions in four categories: task characteristics (autonomy, task variety, task significance, task identity, feedback from the job), knowledge characteristics (job complexity, information processing, problem solving, skill variety, specialization), social characteristics (social support, interdependence, interaction outside the organization, feedback from others) and work context (ergonomics, physical demands, work conditions, equipment use).
- Length and format
- 77 items. 5-pt agreement (self-report questionnaire)
- Language versions
- Validated adaptations in Spanish (including the WDQ-S short version), German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Persian, Turkish and Greek among others - one of the most systematically adapted work-design measures.
- Normative data
- No normative data held in our reference library for this instrument. That is a statement about our library, not about the published literature.
- Licence
- open with attribution
Licence classification is a research judgement by the catalogue’s authors, not legal advice, and it can be out of date. Confirm terms with the copyright holder or publisher before using an instrument, especially for commercial use.

Choosing between this and the alternatives
We do not deliver this instrument. If you are selecting a measure for a research programme, a national survey or an assessment product, and the question is which instrument, in which language, against which norms and under which licence, that is the work we do.
