What it measures
Reading, mathematical and scientific literacy of 15-year-olds, plus a rotating innovative domain (collaborative problem solving 2015, global competence 2018, creative thinking 2022, learning in the digital world 2025) and extensive student, school, teacher and parent context questionnaires.
Length and format
Rotated item pool of several hundred cognitive items per cycle in a balanced-incomplete-block design (2 hours per student); context questionnaires approx 35-60 minutes. multiple-choice, constructed-response and computer-interactive cognitive items; Likert and categorical questionnaire items (performance/ability test plus self-report questionnaire context instruments)
Language versions
Fielded in 90+ languages under a double-translation and reconciliation protocol with formal national adaptation review.
