OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills.
SSES
- What it measures
- 15 social and emotional skills in five Big-Five-aligned domains - task performance (persistence, responsibility, self-control, achievement motivation), emotional regulation (stress resistance, emotional control, optimism), collaboration (empathy, trust, cooperation), open-mindedness (curiosity, creativity, tolerance) and engaging with others (sociability, assertiveness, energy) - plus compound skills and student, parent, teacher and principal context questionnaires.
- Length and format
- Student assessment covering 15 skills (approx 8 items per skill) plus student, parent, teacher and principal context questionnaires. 5-pt Likert agreement items across the student, parent and teacher forms (self-report questionnaire plus informant/observer report (parent and teacher forms))
- Language versions
- Fielded in the national languages of every participating site under the OECD translation and adaptation protocol.
- Normative data
- No normative data held in our reference library for this instrument. That is a statement about our library, not about the published literature.
- Licence
- mixed
Licence classification is a research judgement by the catalogue’s authors, not legal advice, and it can be out of date. Confirm terms with the copyright holder or publisher before using an instrument, especially for commercial use.

Choosing between this and the alternatives
We do not deliver this instrument. If you are selecting a measure for a research programme, a national survey or an assessment product, and the question is which instrument, in which language, against which norms and under which licence, that is the work we do.
